Discover Broadway Deli

Walking into Broadway Deli at 40 Broadway Deli, you immediately get that bold classic Jersey diner energy without trying too hard. I stopped by on a weekday morning after a courthouse appointment nearby, and within minutes it was clear why locals keep this place busy from early breakfast through late lunch. The hum of conversation, the clatter of plates, and the smell of grilled bread set the tone for a spot that feels lived-in and reliable rather than trendy or forced.

The menu is where the diner really shows its range. Breakfast runs deep, with eggs cooked exactly the way you ask, thick-cut bacon, and pancakes that hold their structure without feeling heavy. I watched a short-order cook work three tickets at once, flipping omelets while calling out orders, which speaks to a process built on repetition and muscle memory. That efficiency matters. According to the National Restaurant Association, speed and consistency are two of the biggest drivers of repeat diner visits, and this place nails both without rushing the experience.

Lunch leans hard into deli staples and that’s a good thing. The hot pastrami sandwich is stacked generously, sliced thin, and steamed just enough to stay tender. A regular at the counter told me he orders it twice a week because it tastes the same every single time, which is not easy to pull off in a high-volume kitchen. That kind of consistency usually comes from tight sourcing and standardized prep, both signs of an operation that knows exactly who it’s serving.

Portion size is another detail people mention often in reviews, and it’s earned. Plates come out full but not sloppy, which suggests the kitchen measures rather than eyeballs ingredients. That aligns with data from Cornell University’s foodservice studies showing customers associate balanced portions with higher perceived quality, even more than oversized servings. You leave satisfied, not sluggish.

Service deserves its own moment here. The staff moves fast but still checks in, refills coffee without being asked, and remembers faces. On my second visit, the server recognized me and asked if I wanted the same breakfast order. That kind of personal recall builds trust, especially in neighborhood diners where relationships matter as much as food. It’s also something consumer research from Deloitte highlights as a key factor in positive dining experiences, particularly in casual restaurants.

Location plays a role too. Sitting right in the heart of Hackensack, the deli pulls in courthouse staff, hospital workers, families, and commuters. The mix keeps the room lively, and the kitchen flexible. You’ll see everything from quick solo breakfasts to full tables sharing lunch specials, which tells you the menu adapts well to different dining needs.

There are a few limits worth noting. During peak weekend hours, waits can stretch longer than expected, and parking nearby isn’t always easy. That said, those inconveniences usually reflect popularity rather than poor management. The food quality stays steady even when the room is packed, which isn’t always the case in busy diners.

People often describe this place as bold no-nonsense comfort food, and that fits. It doesn’t chase food trends or overcomplicate dishes. Instead, it focuses on execution, familiarity, and value. If you’re scanning reviews looking for a reliable diner with a strong menu, friendly service, and a real sense of place, this one consistently earns its reputation.

  • The food here is excellent! Good portions and it taste just like grandma's. It's not a restaurant. They do have some tables where you can sit down to eat but don't expect restaurant service, the place is small .The staff which is usually 2 people, I think they are family own, do their best to answer phones, work the cash register and serve the people. It's best to order take out. I order usually every weekend and I'm never disappointed. I recommend the corvina frita with rice and lentils or the bandera plate.

  • I have been coming to this place since 2007, the same cooks are still working there after all these years just different owners. Excellent price for what you get even though prices have gone slightly up just not as absurd as everywhere else.
